I encountered the same problem when I was making my LFS on my ubuntu as
host.
debian and ubuntu use mawk default, and the grammers of mawk and gawk
are different.
you can install gawk, or you can modify the
scripts/gen-sorted.awk
file manually. simply replace all the slashes / in [] to \/ (add a
backslash in front of the slash)
