One experiment you could try would be to download gentoo-sources. Gentoo
is known for excellent hardware compatibility. It's my primary distro.
I'd check to see how well those sources work- they've always served me
well.
The ipw3945 driver definitely supports kernel 2.6- I used it up until a
few weeks ago, when I started using the iwl3945 driver.

Subject: wireless woes Help!
I still have problems with wireless I patched my kernel, but the patch
was unsuccessful.
modprobe outputs the following
modprobe mac80211
[ 239.356.000] mac80211: Unknown symbol iw_handler_set_spy
[ 239.356.000] mac80211: Unknown symbol iw_handler_get_thrspy
[ 239.356.000] mac80211: Unknown symbol wireless_send_event
[ 239.356.000] mac80211: Unknown symbol iw_handler_get_spy
[ 239.356.000] mac80211: Unknown symbol ieee80211_radiotap_iterator
_init
[ 239.356.000] mac80211: Unknown symbol
iee80211_radiotap_iterator_next
[ 239.356.000] mac80211: Unknown symbol iw_handler_set_thrspy
FATAL: Error inserting mac80211
(lib/modules/2.6.22.5DEC/kernel/net/mac80211/mac80211.ko): Unknown
symbol
in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
dmesg prints the mac 80211 at the end.
But when I do lsmod only the snd_hda_Intel which is the intel highe
definition sound driver loads. I followed the guide perfectly
although I did mistype make mac80211 at one point but I repatched and
triple checked everything so I really need help
Classes also begin in 5 days for me so I really need to have this
working. I have also looked on line but can't really find much help in
regards to this. I was thinking of attempting to use the deprecated
ipw3945 drivers but in the documentation they were only supported by
kernel 2.2 and 2.4 so I did not attempt as well you need hotplug scripts
which I believe are only supported by 2.2 and 2.4. Please help
