setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH in .login issue?

I've seen mention that if you set LD_LIBRARY_PATH in your .login that it 
won't get passed to forked sub-shells, but haven't found the definitive 
reference for that behavior.  Adding the directory in question to 
ld.so.conf isn't a good option because it might need to be different 
user to user, and setting it in the .cshrc or .bashrc wouldn't be my 
first choice either.

Does this ring a bell for anyone?  Maybe it's a fairly new behavior?
