Yes, I know it's deprecated, but it is still comfortable for a lot of 
users.  Do you know of any distros without it?

This is what I came up with:

echo '#define PATH_PROCNET_DEV "/proc/net/dev"' >> ifconfig/system/linux.h

./configure --prefix=/usr  \
     --libexecdir=/usr/sbin \
     --localstatedir=/var   \
     --disable-logger       \
     --disable-syslogd      \
     --disable-whois        \


So we only have to add one line and delete one option to include it.
