Opinions differ on this subject. Since "Linus Torvalds and Debian policy
authors" and "Vim authors" cannot be both right, an editor's chioce (aka
policy) must be made. When writing the "console.html" page, I assumed that
the default keymap and Debian policy are right, and that vim authors are
wrong. That is also consistent with the Backspace-Delete howto.

Bruce: as a troubleshooting step, could you please tell us:

1) is there any difference in the output of "stty -a" on the livecd and or
your system? Post both.
2) does a "stty erase ^?" or "stty sane" fix your problem? If it does, please
find out why this is not the default on your system.

My vim (on old post-6.0 LFS) recognizes Backspace correctly on Linux console
by default and misbehaves in the same way as yours if I deliberately
misconfigure "stty erase". Also you say that the problem doesn't exist on the

No, the problem is in fact the opposite (i.e. Bruce does the opposite of the
fix mentioned there). As I said earlier, by deviating from that setup, one
breaks Emacs and well-written apps.
