The fix to what you describe is to either not mount stuff as
a user (two less binaries that need to be suid root), or use 
the option "users" instead of "user".  This will allow any
user to umount the device, regardless of who mounted it.  This
may actually be what you want, since otherwise someone could
forget thier cdrom in the computer, leave, and nobody else who
logs in would be able to remove the cdrom except root.

The dataloss is a known issue, especially with loopback devices,
but the lfs editors decided this loss is acceptable given
the advantages of having the symlink.
