The LILO HOWTO states that this means the first-stage boot loader
encountered a disk drive error, "disk not supported by BIOS".

This could be a BIOS drive-configuration issue, which only
kicks in once you run LILO. Possibly interacting with your
lilo.conf . 

What version of which BIOS are you using?

Do you have LBA (logical block addressing) configured for
that drive? 

What does your lilo.conf contain? 

How _exectly_ are you running LILO? 

Do you have the /boot partition in the first 1,024 cylinders?
