Bzip2 make errors

While trying to install bzip2 I encountered the following problems. First a
rundown of what I did. I'm using LFS 2.3.5b with a AMD K62-500mghz computer
with 128 megs of ram. I'm using Mandrake 7.0 as my base system. I started by
changing the bzip2 makefile as outlined in chapter 5. The resulting lines are:

        $(CC) $(CFLAGS) $ (LDFLAGS) -o bzip2 bzip2.o -L. -lbz2

        $(CC) $(CFLAGS) $ (LDFLAGS) -o bzip2recover bzip2recover.o

I then issued the following commands:

[root at localhost bzip2-1.0.0]# export CFLAGS="-O3 -mcpu=i586 -march=i586"
[root at localhost bzip2-1.0.0]# export CXXFLAGS="-O3 -mcpu=i586 -march=i586"
[root at localhost bzip2-1.0.0]# make -e LDFLAGS=-static

The resulting error was:

gcc -O3 -mcpu=i586 -march=i586 (LDFLAGS) -o bzip2 bzip2.o -L. -lbz2
/bin/sh: -c: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `(L'
/bin/sh: -c: line 1: `gcc -O3 -mcpu=i586 -march=i586 (LDFLAGS) -o bzip2 bzip2.o
-L. -lbz2'
make: *** [bzip2] Error 2

I checked the archives and came up empty. If anyone knows what I'm doing wrong
I would appreciate any help.
