XFree86 4.0 hangs during build (makedepend)

What is wrong with the definition of ERR?  It appears that it checks to
see if it is defined before it is (re)defined.  Thus, no harm can come of
this definition.  I am willing to bet somewhere else, ERR is defined -
probably in the XFree86 sources somewhere - and that is the cause.
