Apache can recode an URL even with patterns.
An example of my httpd.conf:

AliasMatch /dev/([0-9a-zA-z_\-]+/[0-9a-zA-Z_\-]+)(.*) "/mnt/fileserver/$1/development/actual/htdocs/$2"
<Directory "/mnt/fileserver/*/development/actual/htdocs/*>
	Options FollowSymLinks MultiViews
	Order allow,deny
	Allow from all

So you could redirect the old directories to the new
ones like this:
AliasMatch /mail-archives/([a-z\-]+)/([0-9a-z\-]+\.html) "/var/httpd/htdocs/pipermail/$1/$2"

Or if the filenames have changed, you could write a cgi script,
that translates them and redirects to the correct URL:
AliasMatch /mail-archives/([a-z\-]+)/([0-9a-z\-]+\.html) "/var/httpd/htdocs/cgi-bin/$1&file=$2"
(But this is untested by me.)

%> ln -s /dev/null /dev/brain
%> ln -s /dev/urandom /dev/world
%> dd if=/dev/world of=/dev/brain
