The real problem comes when you build from one major-ish version of glibc to another.  Then you need to know that you've escaped the clutches of the old glibc.  If you are doing all this with a new binutils and gcc, then it's even more worthwhile.

The new build method ensures that there can be no library pollution from the old system in the toolchain of the new one - and that the executables produced are the ones the authors of glibc etc. intended.
