Update Partition Table without reboot

In regard to an old question/thread:

http://archive.linuxfromscratch.org/mail-archives/lfs-chat/2002/11/0035.html

Does anybody know how to force an update of partition
info without a reboot? Sometimes it will write it and
other times fdisk calls for a reboot. Simply ignoring
the warnings does *not* work, as suggested in the
thread. Mk*whatever*fs will respond with an

unable to start /dev/hdblah, size reported as zero.

Just trying to simplify a script by avoiding a reboot.
 Thanks!
