I was pretty sure I tested it twice. Let's go for a third time just to be 
sure:

First remove all *curses* libraries:

root:/usr/src# rm /usr/lib/*curses*
root:/usr/src# rm /lib/*curses*

Apply patches, configure with all options, make and make install.

root:/usr/src/ncurses-5.3# file /usr/lib/libcurses.a
/usr/lib/libcurses.a: symbolic link to `libncurses.a'

root:/usr/src/ncurses-5.3# file /usr/lib/libncurses.a
/usr/lib/libncurses.a: current ar archive

The libcurses.a symlink is installed and points to the right file 
(libncurses.a) in the right directory (/usr/lib).

If I did something wrong I'm overlooking it...
