See URL how it all started. Basically next Glibc will enable above POSIX
1003.1-2001 behavior and breaks utilies that use digit options , like tail -1
(instead of something like tail -n 1).

Ryan Oliver is working on patches to correct all these problems (primarily in
configure scripts). Once he is done, apply those patches to the book.
