Here is maybe a nice "package manager" to add to the list of options in 
the faq.

It's called *GNU Source Installer*; (sourceinstall), a graphical tool 
which provides configuration, compilation, installation, tracking and 
removal of source packages.

It looks great , although i didn't tried it myself (yet).
