are you sure? i tested this and it *seems* that the only effect of
that make command is to create some documentation files. i did this
both ways and here's the recursive difference i found:
$ diff -r bfd.orig bfd.new
Only in bfd.new/doc: bfd.h
Only in bfd.new/doc: chew
Only in bfd.new/doc: libbfd.h
Only in bfd.new/doc: libcoff.h
so while documentation files might be handy, it's not clear that
their creation is *essential* to the creation of the final product.
just an observation.
