xorg-server-1.6.3 " No package 'xfont' found"

       xorg-server-1.6.3

While compiling xorg-server-1.6.3  executing the installation commands:
	./configure $XORG_CONFIG 	
	   --with-module-dir=$XORG_PREFIX/lib/X11/modules \
	   --with-xkb-output=/var/lib/xkb \
	   --enable-install-setuid &&	
	make

I have encountered the following termination:

No package 'xfont' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix."

The font-7.4.wget file does not list a 'libXfont" source.  I suspect that the 
Xorg-7.4 has incorporated the "xfonts-*" into some X11 libraries but the 
Makefile does not reflect the change. Any advice in persuing and resolving 
this compile problem  would be appreciated.
