And viola, there is the problem. Look what /usr/lib/libpam.so is
linked to, and then see if that library exists in /lib.

(Hint: one is so.0.81.3 and the other is so.0.81.6)

Your PAM installation needs fixing. And even more reason now
for me to never bother with the locate command. :-)

I'm sure locate is valuable, I've just never found a need for
it.
