Maybe it wouldn't be a good idea to share .basrc, .xinitrc and the like 
between the two OS's

I would only say one thing: never use hfs(+) from linux for important 
data. For me at least it can be said as unstable (both 2.4 and 2.6). 
Don't do that for /home
