Well, my experience with wvdial & pppd was: when i used wvdial to dial
up my ISP i had to enter the user/password combination in
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets manually. As far as i remember it was something
like:

<username>	*	<password>	*

I don't use wvdial anymore but a programm called 'PPPsetup'. It can be
downloaded here:
