Can you ping external IP addresses (rather than domain names)?

Try googles IP address:

$ ping 216.239.37.99

Pinging 216.239.37.99 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=90ms TTL=49
Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=90ms TTL=49
Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=90ms TTL=49

This will tell us whether it is a DNS problem or not.

(Forgive me if you have already done this).
