On 10 Mar, Alexander E. Patrakov spoke thusly:

Yes, libcdread is not found. If it were, it would be listed in the
Input dialog. Also, I checked the lfs 4.0 book and there is nothing
about modifying the owners of any of the groups that MAKEDEV creates. Is
this something I missed ? Besides, on my host system, /dev/hdc is only
accessible, rw, to root and xmms does play CD's there.

My error. The libcdread is under /usr/X11R6/lib/xmms/Input.

ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/xmms/Input gives the following:

total 3064
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 952 Mar 9 10:45 libcdaudio.la
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 565658 Mar 9 10:45 libcdaudio.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 658 Mar 9 11:40 libcdread.la
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 62525 Mar 9 11:40 libcdread.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 923 Mar 9 10:45 libidcin.la
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 125290 Mar 9 10:45 libidcin.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 933 Mar 9 10:45 libmpg123.la
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1635134 Mar 9 10:45 libmpg123.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 715 Mar 9 10:45 libtonegen.la
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 117778 Mar 9 10:45 libtonegen.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1027 Mar 9 10:45 libvorbis.la
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 437978 Mar 9 10:45 libvorbis.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 691 Mar 9 10:45 libwav.la
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 121486 Mar 9 10:45 libwav.so

However, xmms does not find or list it.

My own opinion is that the cause of both libcdaudio and libcdread not
working are the same but I do not have the knowledge to understand what
that is.
