KDE: starting the arts daemon

Hi Richard,

You have been very kind in taking the time to assemble all the stuff you sent.
I do appreciate it. In brief, on my system, artsd does not get launched as part
of the startup sequence, as may be seen below from the ps -aux data and from
the log file I sent earlier. Once it is launched, though either as part of my
.xinitrc file or from the konsole app, sounds play and my FFT display looks
just like yours.

Up until yesterday I was hurting for disk space. I foolishly allocated 1.5 GB
for my LFS partition initially, but yesterday I was able to double the size and
now compiling won't be so hairy. Since I've tried recompiling kdesupport,
kdelibs and kdemultimedia, I'm going back and redo everything starting with
Qt. Initially I didn't understand sound as well as I do now (still not an expert!)

I saw an option in Qt for NAS support and installed NAS (even though I'm
not using it). I also tried ALSA, so it may well be that some of the configure
scripts got led astray by some of the things found on my system.

I've posted requested info below, but don't think it shows anything useful.
After recompiling, I'll post a follow-up in case others travel this road later.

Thanks again for your time and help (so far)...
