How to set library path?

/etc/ld.so.conf contains:

/lib
/usr/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/local/lib

I typed ls -ld `cat /etc/ld.so.conf`
and got:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 2456 May 29 05:55 /lib
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 2896 May 29 18:14 /usr/X11R6/lib
drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 14704 Jun 6 14:03 /usr/lib
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 3232 Jun 6 11:38 /usr/local/lib

So all looks well.. hmm..
