how to use diff?

The problem, as I understood it, was not to apply a patch, but to create one 
by diffing the two source trees while they're still compressed.


In answer to that question, I'm not sure how to do that, but are you sure 
there aren't existing patch files available on kernel.org or one of the 
mirrors?
