What I run is fam with dnotify as per this gentoo bug:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43027

Just messed around some with a dir with 1000 oggs good for 4.1G and an
renaming/deleting an additional 1000 empty files, on a fat32 fs. Fam
doesn't seem to have issues when nautilus has this dir open.
